About Our Oxfordshire Hotel
It all began back in 2006, when co-founder, Justin, discovered that his mother had been in an accident, and left university – aged 20 – to be by her side and help out with the family B&B on Brighton seafront. Whilst standing outside the B&B one day, Justin was asked about available rooms. Soon he had managed to fill the whole place for the weekend, – and just like that, he had caught the hotelier bug!
With a new-found interest in improving the hotel, but no budget for a revamp, Justin had to come up with a plan. Inspired by the Brighton art scene, he sent out an ad for artists to decorate rooms in return for board. Hundreds of artists responded, and soon descended on the place decorating walls, floors & ceilings with unique murals- some of which are still there today!
…and so, Artist Residence was born. Joined by girlfriend Charlie, the pair set about making the concept and hotel a successful business. Ten years later, we now have locations in Brighton, Cornwall, London and most recently, Oxfordshire.
Nestled in the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside, Artist Residence Oxfordshire is a countryside inn with quite the tale to tell! Originally a 16th century farmhouse the building was turned into a pub, The Mason Arms, as a gift to the butler of the Mason Family of Eynsham Hall. Since then the building has had many incarnations, most recently as a renowned country pub run by an eccentric character, Gerry Stonhill, a favourite amongst celebrities such as Marco Pierre-White and Raymond Blanc – it even has it’s own helipad!
The pub was then closed for some time, and we’d like to think we’ve given the old building a new lease of life. The pub and restaurant, Mr Hanbury’s Mason Arms, offers the warm welcome of a traditional English inn with an eccentric twist, whilst our comfy bedrooms are tucked away in the eaves for a peaceful retreat after an evening of indulgence. We serve an inventive menu of seasonal & home-grown produce in a fun and intimate setting, all helped along nicely with fine wines and local ales, with the aim to provide the ultimate countryside getaway for our guests.
We love our beautiful countryside neighbourhood, and we hope you’ll love it as much as we do!
